Thus, it's better to promote and get the promotion bonuses early, because you'll gain level-up stats at pretty much the same rate whether you promote or not. Other people have weighed in with most of the reasons for this conclusion, so I'll add one specific to GBAFE: the exp formula works in such a way that there isn't a big difference in exp gain between level 15+ unpromoted and level 1 promoted units. Usually you won't want to wait past level 15 or so, but I personally find promoting at level 10 is only really good for a handful of units on the very hardest FE games (of which Binding Blade is one). The trickier question is exactly what level to promote at. The only exception would be in a game where reaching 20/20 was likely, which I don't think is true of any FE game except Awakening. You should almost always promote before level 20, where possible. It’s far more useful, in general, to have a more powerful character early, when the rest of your team is still fairly weak, as opposed to barely eking through mid-levels so they can be marginally better when your entire team is powerful. Because of this, being powerful in the late game is not that important. The breakpoints for things such as doubling the final boss, not being one-shot by him, or holding a choke point will be hit closer to 15/10 or so for most characters. Speaking of which…įull levels are usually overkill in the endgame. Classing up a few characters early makes the mid game much easier. This means that the character you classed up will instantly be much better - meaning they can rank better, gain xp easier, and even can set up kills for allies more efficiently. I’m talking the equivalent of 5 or more level ups on average, plus possible abilities or weapon access. The class up increases are usually massive. Because of that, even in endgame, you’re only going to be down maybe a couple levels compared to if you delayed, and probably not even that much. It is very rare for characters to reach max level, or even really get close. Others have basically said this, but to put it succinctly, there are 3 major reasons I can think of:
